Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level test helps you write better content, says Sacramento WordPress website company

Make your WordPress website easier to read

When you create entries for your WordPress website or any website in general, you should write in an easy-to-read manner. The Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level test can help. The Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level test will analyze your text and assign it a score. The higher the score, higher the grade level. The lower the score, the lower the grade level.

Writing to the right grade level is a balancing act. You should write for a higher grade level if that is where your audience resides. You should write for a lower grade level if that is where your audience resides. Search engines prefer the lower grade level.

I first learned about this back when I lived in Chicago. I learned the Chicago Tribune was written at a 6th grade reading level. I have a Bachelor’s Degree . Most large newspapers are written near a 6th grade reading level.

Your WordPress website will be more SEO friendly

Let me summarize how this works. The FKGL test analyzes your content. It counts the sentences, words and syllables. The more words you have in a sentence, the higher the grade level. The more syllables you have in an average sentence, the higher the grade level. Flesch rewards shorter sentences and fewer syllables with a lower grade level assessment. The content is simpler and easier to read. A full explanation that includes the formula is at Wikipedia. The lower the grade level, the easier to read. The lower the grade level, the more attractive your verbiage will be to the search engines. It’s a balancing act.

Here’s an example. If you’ve visited my WordPress website lately and read the left frame, you would have found,

If you have been running a business for more than two years and are not flooded with cash, you should contract out your marketing, WordPress website and social media campaigns to someone you can hold accountable. Tell him to get you more business. You already have enough on your mind.

This scores a 7.9 in the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level test. This is almost at an 8th grade reading level.

Suppose I wanted to make the text fancier. I would make sentences longer and replace some words with others that have more syllables. The new text would be,

The grade level jumps to 13 on the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level test. It is tougher to read. I found it tougher to proofread this paragraph compared to the last paragraph. I really didn’t change much in this second paragraph.
You can invoke the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level test in your Microsoft Word documents. I am using MS Office 2010. You can turn on this feature in Outlook and Word. Here are instructions from Microsoft:

Outlook 2010/2013

  • Click File, and then click Options.
  • Click Mail, and then, under Compose Messages, click Spelling and AutoCorrect.
  • Click Proofing.
  • Under When correcting spelling in Outlook, make sure the Check grammar with spelling check box is selected.
  • Select the Show readability statistics check box.

After you enable this feature, open a file that you want to check, and check the spelling. When Outlook or Word finishes checking the spelling and grammar, it displays information about the reading level of the document.
